Many tourist come to Spain to visit the historical majestic cities, but the beaches and coasts of Spain may be the most loved.

From the beautiful beaches near Barcelona to the Balearic Islands of Ibiza and Palma, there is nothing but tons of fun under the Spanish sun.

The beaches and coasts of Spain may be some of the best known features of this lovely country. They are popular destinations for thousands of foreign tourists and Spanish citizens alike each year. The Northern coasts are specially loved and are visited by millions of European and American tourists who enjoy the Spanish sun, and change their color from pink to red.

Spain is located on the Iberian Peninsula and occupies about 80% of that land. The country boasts nearly 5,000 kilometers of coastline. Therefore, it goes without saying that the coasts of spain are too numerous to describe in full detail in any document shorter than a complete book or focused travel guide.

Below there is a list of some of the most attractive beaches and coasts of Spain:

Costa del Sol

Approximately three hundred kilometers of the Mediterranean littoral, lies along the coast of the province of Malaga and is called Costa del Sol, literally the "Coast of Sun." This coastline lives up to its name, offering infrequent rainfall and comfortable weather nearly year-round. Part of the reason for the comfort afforded Costa del Sol's beaches, is the protection from the Northern Winds provided by the mountains which stretch in some places all the way to the sea. This area is perhaps the most popular of the beaches and coasts of Spain for tourists in search of its famous sun and surf fun. The surrounding cities and villages are alive by themselves, with Spanish culture presented in part for their benefit and in part as a way of Spanish life.

Costa Blanca

The line of the Mediterranean coast that belongs to the Spanish province of Alicante is known as Costa Blanca. This area of beaches and coasts of Spain may be one of the best examples of what is considered purely Mediterranean landscape in all of Spain. This coastline offers something for everyone with beaches along populous, bustling cities and sparsely populated, beautiful rural areas. Much of the area's Moorish history and cultural influences are reserved in the cultures and architecture of the surrounding areas and is a definite sight for those who choose to travel here. One look at the magnificent white sands of the beaches will tell the traveler where this stretch of coast got its name (Costa Blanca translates to "White Coast.")

Costa Brava

Costa Brava, in the region of Girona, just near Barcelona, includes quaint and beautiful fishing villages, picturesque landscapes, and incredible scenery. Salvador Dali loved it here and you will too, especially if you visit the Cap de Creus Natural Park with its amazing landscape. The coastline itself stretches for about 200 kilometers and includes a unique combination of mountainous shores and pristine beaches. In the long long summer, places like Lloret del Mar and others are turning to a lively beach towns with waves of pinkish-redish tourists drinking their way to beach, and campings sites are everywhere.

Rías Baixas

This line of beaches and coasts of Spain lies along the coast of Ponteverda and is surrounded by a natural rugged relief of rocky shores. Religious legend in the area teaches that the unique impressions and inlets along this stretch are the resulting mark left by the hand of God when he washed His fingers in the sea after completing the creation of the world. The most notable beaches here include Playa de Carabuxeira, A Lanzada, Xunqueira, and Do Testal. If visiting here, be sure to visit the Islas de Ons and Onza, home to some of the most interesting wildlife in the area.

Nude Beaches

Spain is famous for its nude and clothing optional beaches, especially in the South where the weather is optimal for nude sunbathing nearly year round. Many tourists come here just for a glimpse of the beautiful europian bodies basking in the glory of the sun and wearing only what they were born with. Many of them stay in nudist-towns and have a completly natural experience. Nude beaches abound in the Canary Islands with one of the best being on Tenerife, but they can literally be found all over the country. If you never been to a nude-beach before, spain is the right place for you learn more about your body and to test your own inhibitions.
